Four fundamental factors to finding a topcoat
Choosing the right topcoat might seem like a simple task. It should look good, fit well and be suitable for the autumn and winter months. However, while that may sound straight forward, when you begin the selection process, you’ll likely find it a more difficult choice than you expect.
Carter Savoy appreciates that every person has an individual style and we are here to accommodate that, to the smallest detail. One way we find helps to ensure you select, are fitted for and purchase the perfect top coat, is to consider the following four fundamental factors.
As you would expect, there are a variety of styles of topcoat available. Three popular options of topcoat are:
- A day-to-day, heavy wool, long coat, or topcoat.
- The luxurious topcoat, made from 100% cashmere and fine wools.
- Trench coats, which can often see you through more than just the autumn.
The heavy wool, long coat is perfect for those cold, wet wintry days. The heavy material will keep you warm and protect your attire from any adverse weather. Single or double-breasted options are available.
Cashmere looks – and feels – wonderful to wear, making the luxurious topcoat option the perfect seasonal style for events or important dates in your diary.
When choosing your trench coat, there are a variety of style on offer. Long, short and a selection of colours, make a trench coat perfect protection from the autumn rain. The waterproofing works to stop the rain seeping through to your other layers of clothing.
If you’re considering the day-to-day, wool long coat, darker colours tend to work best as you charcoal, navy and blacks will all feel and look stylish, warm and wear well, too.
For the cashmere topcoat, camel and lighter greys look as good as the darker colours. Again, you have can opt for either single or double-breasted and both would work well in a formal, occasion or less formal setting.
Moving to the trench coat, numerous colours are suitable in this style of coat, allowing you to layer by material and colour – or both. Navy and black have a real air of sophistication, while a charcoal, camel or even khaki colour, are the perfect choice for a less formal occasion.
While there is some room for personal preference here, the style of your topcoat has some bearing on the way it should fit.
The most well-dressed men require clothing that fits them perfectly, with a little room for personal comfort. If you prefer a sharp fit and sleeker look, then a single-breasted day-to-day long coat or luxury wool coat, fits the bill.
A double-breasted topcoat naturally looks bulkier, due to the additional material required for the style. However, it should still fit you well, over your suit. A trench coat traditionally comes in the double-breasted style, ensuring there’s enough fabric to look smart, keep your attire dry and also pull up the collar for added warmth.
The final fundamental factor to your topcoat of choice, is that you have to look good while wearing it. This detail is achieved through a combination of the three already mentioned. However, in most cases, some adjustment will be required from any off the peg topcoat you buy, to achieve this.
Making your purchase from a tailor will help ensure the fit of your topcoat is perfect for you. Your tailor will also advise you the right colouring for your needs, along with the style that will suit you best.
A tailor-made topcoat is one that will accentuate everything you want it to, whenever you wear it. Your tailor will also likely encourage an annual topcoat MOT, to ensure your coat – and you – are looking your best, each year that you wear it.
